Berlin Philharmonic will offer benefit concert in Japan

Berlin, March 15 (dpa) - Berlin Philharmonic on Wednesday offered a benefit concert for victims of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, their spokesmen said Thursday. The Berliner Philharmoniker, one of the most important symphony orchestras in the world, the concert will benefit only a day after the expected performance of the Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim.

The general manager of the Philharmonic, Martin Hoffmann, give a speech before the concert tomorrow, which will play "Funeral Music", the Polish composer Witold Lutoslavski, under the baton of Dutch musician, Bernard Haitink. The Berlin Philharmonic was several times in Japan, especially after Herbert von Karajan was one of the leading conductors of the institution, in office between 1954 and 1989.

Moreover, among the musicians of the Philharmonic several Japanese, including Daishin Kashimoto violin.
