London, March 1 (dpa) - supposed death of the legendary Freddie Mercury of Queen also the end? And the other band members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, should have forgotten the name? Among the fans, are controversial questions, but 40 years after the birth of one of the most successful groups in the world, May and Taylor do not see things as strict.
Guitar and drums want to protect the heritage of Mercury. For them, Queen is a kind of creation that exist in any case, whatever they do. "My first thought was: we left," May remembers the days that followed that November 24, 1991, when Mercury died. "I thought it was over. Queen hung like a dark shadow over me, "he said in conversation with dpa.
So began a solo career, just like Taylor. Bassist John Deacon left the music. However, when they topped the worst, everything changed. "I realized that Queen is our creation," says May. Queen there was an entity in itself. And May and Taylor continued. The origins of this building date back 40 years ago.
In London, which according to Taylor was then "the place where it all happened, found Mercury, May and Taylor in 1971. Soon after they joined bassist Deacon. "We fully understood what we wanted to do," recalls May. "We had the same vision of what we wanted to create." And this happened by harmonic and melodic arrangements.
"We were very close." The jump came in 1974, with "Killer Queen." Two years later, "Bohemian Rhapsody" finally catapulted to the top. In 1977 Queen wrote "We Are The Champions", followed by some ups and downs and all kinds of global hits like "A Kind of Magic," "Hammer To Fall", "Radio Ga Ga" or "I Want To Break Free".
After Mercury's death appeared several compilation albums. In 2002, premiered in London musical "We Will Rock You", followed by several projects. In the spring of 2005 returned to tour with Paul Rodgers and although at first some fans were not enthusiastic about the idea, the tour was a success.
According to May, collaboration with Rodgers worked so well because he did not try to be Freddie. They did not want that, it was rare enough still be called Queen. This year would have concerts again with the help of many friends. Universal ten albums remastered and re-launch is planned where the movie "Borat" Sacha Baron Cohen will play Mercury.
There will be a music album with Mercury and Michael Jackson. "We do what we like Queen," said May. "We feel a kind of protective effect with respect to Freddie. We continue to protect them while we can. " And is that looking back at 40 years of history is exciting. "Sometimes I still think it was all a dream.
A small part of me still believes that in reality did not happen. " By Britta Gurke
